Superior Coastal
Experience the Coast of Lake Superior
Heyden, Goulais River, Havilland Bay, Harmony Beach, Batchawana, Pancake Bay, Montreal River Harbour
The Superior Coastal highlands are historic hamlets, villages and geography on the shores of Lake Superior. Everyone should have Big Lake Superior on their bucket list. Superior’s coast has beautiful sandy beaches sheltered by rugged, rocky cliffs and pristine wilderness. The waters of Lake Superior are clear and clean making it perfect for swimming, canoeing or kayaking. There are 3 provincial parks on Highway 17: Batchawana Bay (day-use), Pancake Bay and Lake Superior. Enjoy a day at the beach to picnic and swim, or hike one of the many trail systems in the parks. Some popular trails are the Coastal Trail at Lake Superior Provincial Park and the Lookout Trail at Pancake Bay. The Lookout Trail overlooks the stretch of Superior known as the “graveyard of the Great Lakes” where the ship Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a fierce November storm in 1975. The many inland lakes and rivers offer excellent walleye, muskie, northern pike, smallmouth bass and trout fishing.
Further up Highway 17 North is Montreal River Harbour and Wawa, prime touring country for the do-it-yourself fall colour tour from mid-September to mid-October. The lush green forest transforms magically into an explosion of spectacular fall colours — fiery oranges, scarlet reds and golden yellows. In winter, there are plenty of opportunities to cross-country ski, downhill ski and backcountry ski, snowshoe and snowmobile trails.
Have your choice of tent and trailer parks, motels, cabins and resorts. Experience true Northern hospitality and delicious meals at the restaurants, or browse for locally made crafts at gift shops. Local amenities along the coast include gas stations, general stores and trading posts where you can purchase necessities.
