Find Your Perfect Base Camp
It’s no secret that Algoma’s largest provincial park, Lake Superior Provincial Park, is a must-stop for any travellers passing through. The park itself provides numerous hiking trails, campgrounds, canoe routes and of course, scenic vistas. We realize that not everyone is comfortable camping or even back-country camping. If you are looking to enjoy the park for a few days, or even a week, there are accommodations outside the park located North and South. Some accommodations offer motel rooms or even cabins.
Just South of the Park
Batchawana Bay
Superior’s coastline is made of rugged rocky cliffs, pristine wilderness and beautiful sandy beaches. Batchawana was once an important fishing site for the Ojibwe (and still is today) and then the North West Company. The Hudson’s Bay Company had an outpost and fishing station at the mouth of the Batchawana River. There are many ways to enjoy the beauty of the area: hiking, paddling, photography, fishing; and in the fall, the vibrant colours.

Montreal River Harbour
Montreal River Harbour is a small community at the mouth of the Montreal River. This section of Hwy 17 in Montreal River Harbour is best known for the winding uphill road. This provides an incredible view of Lake Superior heading north or south. This location is a short distance from the park, approximately 10 minutes from the entrance and 30 minutes to the middle of the park.
Just North of the Park
Wawa
Wawa is the hub for vacationers and best known for the famous Canada Goose Monument that welcomes travellers on Trans Canada Hwy 17 and Hwy 101. The Goose marks the opening of the last link of the Lake Superior section of Hwy 17 more than 50 years ago. It’s a destination for paddlers, hikers, fishermen, and snowmobilers. Learn stories of the First Nations people, local historical characters and visitors like pianist Glenn Gould, and the members of the Group of Seven like A.Y. Jackson.
- Beaver Motel: A traditional motel offering comfortable, convenient, and affordable rooms near the junction of Highways 17 and 101.
- Rock Island Lodge: A unique, intimate bed and breakfast-style lodge located directly on the rugged Lake Superior coast, with a few select rooms, and unique glamping options like waterfront geodesic domes and prospector tents. It’s also the base for Naturally Superior Adventures.
- Wawa Motor Inn: The largest year-round motel, resting on 17 acres, is an interesting mix of classic motel rooms and private log chalets/cabins that can sleep up to eight guests.
