Algoma That Destination for Fly Fishing

Algoma Country is Big, Vast, Wild and Pristine

Algoma Country in Ontario’s north has been a destination for anglers for decades. Vast landscapes dotted by nearly countless bodies of water, dissected by even more rivers, creeks and streams make the entire area a sports paradise. Though there are many species, lodges and regions within Algoma Country to fish, and several businesses have realized the opportunity to expand their offerings to fly anglers.  Catching fish in this region on the fly is what all of our hosts at The New Fly Fisher look forward to every year. But why in Algoma that destination for fly fishing?

First and foremost, the fishing here is FANTASTIC. Especially on the fly! However, if you’ve never picked up a fly rod, you need not worry. Fly fishing is as easy as you want to make it. It is simply a different way of angling. The principles are the same as conventional fishing; both present a potential food source to trick fish into eating. Fly fishing draws direct parallel similarities to conventional angling. Sure, the equipment is a little different, as are the lures and flies; however, the result is the same – having the ability to catch multi-species giants in Algoma Country. Perfect!

Technology today allows anglers the ability to catch any fish that swims on a fly…if it’s wet and eats, you can target that species with a fly rod. From panfish like yellow perch and rock bass to giant catfish, northern pike and musky, all can be targeted, caught and released on the fly. Algoma Country is well known for its multi-species, and rightly so. With access to great lake species such as Atlantic salmon and steelhead with professional guide services or fly-in opportunities for trophy walleye, northern pike and brook trout or drive to locations, Algoma has you covered. Bring your boat or be whisked away on a fly-in adventure; there is something for every ability of angler in the region.

Algoma Country, and its virtually overall unpressured angling opportunities, is highly accessible for fly anglers. The road gateway from the south is straight up one of Ontario’s most accessible highways, Highway 400, from the border in Buffalo or Niagara Falls, or motorists can drive across the border at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, to the Sault on the Ontario side.

An 8-hour drive from Toronto finds you in Algoma Country, as does access from Sault Ste. Marie’s airport is for those who prefer to take to the air. Driving north in Algoma is an adventure in itself, with countless do-it-yourself opportunities to stop, string up your fly rod and have a go after a short hike off the beaten path.
